Mithun Mitra
Project Scientist
      University of California, Los Angeles

I am currently a Project Scientist at UCLA. I am affiliated with the Department of Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology and the Department of Biological Chemistry in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

I have years of experience doing experimental and computational research in various areas of biomedical sciences. I am passionate about mentoring and training undergraduate students through their involvement in different research projects. I am a team player and truly enjoy working in a team to solve research problems.

My current research at UCLA focuses on gene regulatory mechanisms that maintain cells in a quiescent state and the epigenetic and non-epigenetic determinants of cancer heterogeneity. My interests lie in using a variety of genomic methods and datasets to understand the regulatory mechanisms at a global level.

I grew up in a small town in Central India. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Industrial Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. Following that, I moved to the United States for further studies and received my Masters and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. I did my postdoctoral work at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD, National Institutes of Health.

At UCLA, I have received the Life Sciences Excellence in Research Award and the Staff Assembly Professional Development Award. In the past, I received Travel Awards to attend various national and international conferences.
